Minoxidil 5% w/v is a clinically proven topical vasodilator used for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss). It works by increasing blood flow to hair follicles, prolonging the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, and stimulating dormant follicles to promote thicker, stronger hair regrowth. Originally developed as an oral antihypertensive medication under the brand name Loniten, Minoxidil was later formulated into a topical solution after its hair growth–stimulating effects were discovered. The 5% strength is widely recommended for better efficacy compared to lower strengths, especially in individuals experiencing moderate hair thinning. Minoxidil 5% is suitable for men and women (with medical advice), and it is most effective when used consistently over a prolonged period. Visible results typically appear after 3–6 months of regular use.
